Profile

I am currently studying for a degree in Journalism at the University of the West of Scotland campus in Hamilton so I am available for part-time, freelance or cover work. I am also interested in any work experience opportunities which will help to complement my studies. I feel I have many skills to offer and have a good knowledge of sports journalism after several years of experience in the industry.

Work Experience

June 2000 – present: Reporter/Producer – 103.3 Sports, Oban FM, Scotland

Since I first joined the 103.3 Sports team as a volunteer answering the telephones in 2000, I have went on to undertake various duties including:

• Reporting – I have reported on several football matches & events over the past few years including Scottish Cup & CIS Cup matches, UEFA Cup draws & finals and international matches. This has given me vital experience of the procedures to be followed when covering a match. I also regularly submit pieces of sports news to our news editor for inclusion in the main news broadcasts.
• Interviewing – Conducting interviews with players & managers and attending press conferences means I am comfortable with these situations and have developed the techniques required for a solid interview.
• Producing – I am also the main producer of 103.3 Sports and weekly tasks include pre-recording, editing, writing and people management within a team in a very hectic environment. This involves a huge amount of preparation, which can sometimes be very hectic and it has taught me how to reach imminent deadlines and how to work under pressure. I also drive the desk during our weekly live studio shows.
• Outside Broadcasts – I have organised several live outside broadcasts from events such as the Oban pre-season Football tournament which features SPL clubs and Shinty’s Macaulay Cup Final. I am comfortable working with portable ISDN equipment and have the technical knowledge required for sports broadcasting.

May 2006 – Present: Freelance Journalist

• I write freelance articles on news and sports including Football and Tennis. Some of my articles have appeared in the Daily Record and The Herald national newspapers and also on the BritishTennis.net website.

• From May 2006 to February 2008, I wrote a monthly article called 10 Questions of Sport for a local magazine entitled the West Coast Review which was distributed to every address in the Oban area. The article consisted of an interview with a local sports personality which would give the reader an insight into the personality’s particular sport.

• In March 2009, I took part in a work experience placement with The Times where I shadowed Neil Harman, Tennis Correspondent, at the Davis Cup match between Great Britain and Ukraine at Braehead.

• I regularly cover football matches in the Scottish Football League and Scottish Cup for Moray Firth Radio. Duties include live pre-match, half-time and full-time reports as well as updates throughout the game. I also conduct post-match interviews with managers and players.

Interests

• I am a keen competitive Tennis player and have competed in competitions of a national standard in the past.

• I enjoy watching a variety of Sports including Football, Tennis, Golf and many more.

• I have a full driving licence.

• I completed the SFA Referees Course in June 2004.
