Heather Watson’s quest for her second professional singles title ended in the Aegon Pro Series challenger at Scotstoun, Glasgow yesterday.
The 17-year-old US Open junior champion from Guernsey lost 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2) to Selima Sfar, the champion in Glasgow in 2002 and vastly more experienced at the age of 32.
Watson said: “She played quite old school with the slice and volleys. I didn’t make many balls today which wasn’t good and I wasn’t really at the top of my game. I’m glad to have got two wins in qualifying this week but I hope I will come back stronger and get much further into the tournament next time.”
In the men’s event, the British No.5 Dan Evans was a 6-2 6-4 winner over Ireland’s Barry King and faces another Irishman, Conor Niland, in today’s quarter finals.
