Heather Watson, the US Open junior champion from Guernsey, qualified for the main draw at the ITF $25k women’s challenger in Glasgow yesterday.
The 17-year-old world No.603 beat Mona Barthel, of Germany, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) to earn a first-round tie tomorrow against world No.312 Selima Sfar of Tunisia today. She said: “I enjoyed playing qualifying as I get a feel for the courts and get back into good habits.”
Watson is balancing life on the tour with her last senior year at school but enjoys the distraction homework brings. “It gets my mind away from tennis and I like to study,” she said.
Contesting the $15,000 men’s Futures is the 19-year-old Great Britain Davis Cup player Dan Evans, who won his opener against Christopher Simpson.
The world No.297 lost twice in last month’s tie against Poland but is upbeat about the benefits of the experience gained from being a member of the team alongside Andy Murray. “I took a lot of positives from the week, learnt a lot and I know what to do next time,” he said.
